I (Glen Young) started the Karma Project in an attempt to help my good friend, Karma Sherpa, and the people of Sibuje Village who have offered me so much hospitality and friendship over the years. But the project has potential outside of Sibuje. This project can help the entire tourism industry in Nepal by setting a new standard for fair treatment of workers. Additionally, it can reduce pollution across the country. By providing an income through sustainable tourism, people can’t help but reduce their environmental impact. They are paid to do it. And that pay, in turn, is put into education and other services desperately needed by rural communities in Nepal. Although helping my friend and his community would be enough for me, it may not be enough for Nepal.
